The European Research Council (ERC) is awarding two Synergy Grants worth around 3.3 and 2.4 million euros to researchers in Vienna: In his DegrAbility project, cell biologist Sascha Martens is investigating how cells remove harmful protein deposits – a key to developing new Alzheimer's therapies. Together with teams from Freiburg and Berkeley, he aims to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms of cellular self-cleaning. Innovation researcher Stefan Wagner is leading the SUSTECH project, which investigates why dangerous chemicals often come onto the market faster than safe alternatives. With the help of AI and data-driven analysis, the aim is to create political and economic incentives for sustainable innovation.
