Christina Biasi from the Institute of Ecology at the University of Innsbruck has been awarded an ERC Synergy Grant for her project researching permafrost thawing. Together with teams from France, Sweden, and the UK, she is investigating how the rapid warming of northern peatlands is changing greenhouse gas emissions. A unique field experiment in northern Finland will show for the first time how CO₂, methane, and nitrous oxide emissions develop during the natural thawing of a permafrost bog. The new data will be incorporated into AI-supported models that are intended to make future climate forecasts significantly more accurate.
