Following its successful reaccreditation, the Gustav Mahler Private University of Music (GMPU) has achieved another important milestone: at the end of January 2026, the accreditation agency AQ Austria approved a six-semester PhD programme in the field of artistic research. With the new doctoral programme, Carinthia will become home to a second full university alongside the University of Klagenfurt, further strengthening the province's position as a centre of education and science.
Registration for the new doctoral programme begins in February and is aimed at students at GMPU, but students from other universities are also welcome to apply. The programme lasts six semesters, meaning that the first ‘doctorate in music’ could be awarded in 2029. A maximum of six PhD students will be accepted in the first year of the programme. The amount of tuition fees will be determined by the University Council in the coming weeks.
