On the occasion of World Refugee Day, we would like to draw attention to the current situation of refugees in higher education, specifically in Austria. Even though numerous refugees have not only successfully completed compulsory education, but also pursued higher education, they are rarely associated with higher education in the first place.
According to UNHCR, 7% of refugees worldwide have access to higher education, compared to only 1% in 2019. But this is far below the global average of 42% higher education enrolment among non-refugees.
This blog post entitled Fostering inclusion: Showcasing successful refugee integration in Austria’s higher education landscape in cooperation with JKU - Johannes Kepler Universität Linz, published on the EAIE European Association for International Education website gives you a look at successful initiatives fostering inclusion of refugees at higher education institutions in Austria. However, the authors argue that despite many initiatives and support from various stakeholders, significant challenges persist.
