2 min read · 03. June 2025

From 27 to 30 May 2025, the OeAD took part in the NAFSA Annual Conference & Expo in San Diego as part of the "Study in Austria" initiative, together with 14 Austrian higher education institutions. At stand no. 2438, the OeAD provided information about Austria as a study destination, available degree programmes, and scholarship opportunities.

During the event, the participating representatives of Austrian higher education institutions engaged with existing partner institutions and forged new international connections. NAFSA offered numerous opportunities to network with HEIs from around the globe, as well as diverse insights into current developments in global higher education.

A key highlight was the session titled “Purpose and Impact: International Strategies for Leveraging Alumni Communities”, chaired by OeAD Managing Director Jakob Calice. The session explored how universities in Asia, Europe, and North America can strategically involve alumni as partners, advisors, and supporters in order to advance long-term institutional goals.

During a side visit to Neurocrine Biosciences in San Diego, CA, representatives of Austrian HEIs and OeAD CEO Jakob Calice had the opportunity to connect with scientists working on drug development for neurological diseases. The visit took place upon the invitation of Dietrich Haubenberger, Executive Medical Director and former ASciNA President. An inspiring experience at the intersection of science, innovation, and international collaboration.

A particularly memorable occasion was the evening reception at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, co-organised with ASciNA and Fulbright Austria. Over 80 guests from Austrian and international higher education institutions, Fulbright alumni, and representatives of national agencies gathered for informal and inspiring exchanges. The welcome address by host Mary Munk also paid tribute to the remarkable legacy of oceanographer Walter Munk and the work of the Walter Munk Foundation, which powerfully highlighted the value of international scientific cooperation.

In an interview moderated by Jakob Calice, Friedrich Faulhammer (University for Continuing Education Krems), Thomas R. Schmidt (UC San Diego / ASciNA), and Hermann Agis (Fulbright Austria) shared valuable perspectives on the strategic significance of international academic exchange. They especially emphasised the benefits for individual researchers and the lasting contribution of programmes such as Fulbright to strengthening global partnerships.
