What is healthy soil? How can you measure soil health? Which animals live in the soil? Visitors to the Natural History Museum Vienna (NHM) were able to explore these questions on 6 June as part of the ‘Get to know diversity’ event series in Dock 50. The Citizen Science Award project ‘SoilBlitz’ introduced itself: In this project, citizen scientists can collect comprehensive data on soil health using easy-to-perform tests. Some of these, such as the tests on soil texture and colour, could be tried out directly on site together with the researchers.

The numerous soil organisms, such as snails, springtails, mites, woodlice, earthworms etc. were also in the spotlight: visitors were able to microscope these animals in the Dock 50 laboratory and ask NHM experts questions about them.

Anyone interested can take part in the ‘SoilBlitz’ project until the end of July as part of the Citizen Science Award.
