The recently launched ‘Digital GameBase/d Learning’ project at the University of Vienna utilises the potential of digital games for school lessons. The aim is to create an open, digital database with carefully selected computer games and suitable teaching materials for subjects such as history, computer science, German and geography. The platform is being developed as a wiki that enables pupils, teachers and students to create and edit content together with the research team - in the spirit of citizen science.

The research project addresses the increasing importance of digital games in everyday life and education and utilises the GameLab with its comprehensive gaming equipment as a research location. In cooperation with three Viennese schools specialising in computer science and/or media, innovative teaching concepts are to be developed, tested and evaluated in the classroom.

A particular focus of the project is on the participation of pupils, who can contribute their own gaming experience to the development. This results in practical, creative materials that will also be used beyond the project in everyday school life. The project thus provides important impetus for the sustainable integration of game-based education into the school system.
